The Issue

Heartbreak pervades many neighborhoods with the advent of 'trunk or treat' events taking over the traditional trick or treating during Halloween. A noticeable drop in neighbourhood activity has occurred in recent years, largely due to the shift toward these organized events. The streets that used to be filled with joy and anticipation as dressed-up children collected candy, now lie dark and deserted.

For those of us whose joy lies in the giving and not just the receiving of candy, this transition is wrenching. Opening our doors to receive these little hands eagerly collecting their joy is what Halloween is all about for us. 'Trunk or treat' events are undoubtedly safer, more efficient, and easier for parents. A study by the National Confectioners Association (2019) even saw the popularity of 'trunk-or-treating' rise to 16%. However, dismissing the traditional trick or treat in favor of 'trunk or treat' events is tearing at the fabric of our community spirit, a defining element of Halloween's charm.

We urge city officials, schools, and community leaders to reconsider this shift. There must be a balance where safety and convenience don't rob away community interaction and the thrill of doorstep trick or treating that we hold dear. This plea is also extended to our neighbors. Let's find ways to keep Halloween traditions alive in our communities safely.

Please sign this petition to preserve traditional trick or treating and keep the spirit of Halloween alive in our neighborhoods.
