The Issue

On August 30, 2025, my ex-boyfriend Camden O’Brien tragically passed away. His death was caused by a fatal mixture that included kratom, a substance he had no idea could be this dangerous when mixed with other drugs. Camden’s story is not an isolated incident. Since his death, I have heard from countless other families who have suffered the loss of loved ones due to the implications of kratom use. It is heartbreaking to see this recurring pain amongst families in Iowa and beyond, brought on by a substance that is not adequately regulated or advertised for its potential dangers.

Kratom, often marketed as a natural pain reliever and mood enhancer, is easily accessible throughout the state of Iowa. Despite its natural label, kratom can have severe negative effects, especially when consumed with other substances. The issue lies in the lack of public awareness and proper warning regarding the potential interactions and side effects of this drug. Currently, kratom is not controlled under the Federal Controlled Substances Act in the U.S., leaving states to govern its sale and distribution individually. Without a ban, or at the very least stricter regulations, more individuals remain at risk.

Statistics reveal a worrying trend. The American Association of Poison Control Centers reported a significant increase in calls related to kratom exposure, rising from 263 in 2010 to over 1800 in 2018. Moreover, the FDA has suggested the potential for kratom to cause addiction and lead to life-threatening illnesses.

We can no longer turn a blind eye to these alarming facts. By banning the sale of kratom in Iowa, we can take a proactive step in preventing further loss of life and protect our communities from this hidden menace. The safety of our residents should be paramount, and we owe it to those we have lost to act now.

We urge Iowa legislators to take action and impose a ban on the sale of kratom. This decisive action could save lives and prevent the spreading of misinformation about this potentially dangerous substance. Please join me in this essential effort to safeguard our communities. Sign this petition to demand that our representatives place the health and safety of Iowans above commercial interests. Let us honor the memory of those we have lost by fighting for a safer future.
