The Issue

The increasing availability of marijuana products for recreational use and the widespread sale of vape pens pose significant threats to public health, particularly for our youth. Marijuana, once considered a harmless drug, is now being linked to a range of mental health issues, including psychosis and schizophrenia. Studies from reputable institutions such as the National Institute on Drug Abuse have shown that frequent use of marijuana can alter brain development and diminish cognitive functions, especially in adolescents whose brains are still developing.

Additionally, vape pens, which often contain concentrated forms of THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana, have become alarmingly popular among young people. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported on the dangers of vaping-related illnesses, including severe lung injuries that have been linked to these devices. The flavors and marketing of vape pens make them particularly appealing to teenagers, increasing the risk of addiction and long-term health consequences.

There is also the issue of second-hand exposure. Thousands of non-smokers, including children and seniors, are being subjected to second-hand marijuana smoke and vape emissions. Recent data suggests that these emissions may contain harmful substances that can affect non-users' health, leading to respiratory problems and other health issues.

In light of these concerns, we urge our lawmakers to enact a ban on the sale of marijuana products intended for recreational use and to prohibit the sale of vape pens. It's imperative that we prioritize the health and safety of our communities, especially our youth, by taking these necessary steps. Doing so will prevent the normalization of drug use and protect future generations from its adverse effects.
