The Issue

Too many dogs end up in shelters or rescues as a heartbreaking result of overbreeding, uneducated pet owners, and insufficient spay/neuter laws. Our community in Iowa City has the chance to step up and make a meaningful difference. With only a few pet stores remaining in the entire state of Iowa, now is the perfect time for Iowa City lawmakers to enact a ban on the sale of pets in these stores.

Retail pet stores often source their animals from large-scale, commercial breeding facilities, commonly known as puppy mills, where profit is prioritized over animal welfare. According to the Humane Society of the United States, breeding dogs in these facilities often suffer in overcrowded, unsanitary conditions, lacking proper veterinary care, socialization, and adequate food or shelter. By continuing to allow the sale of pets in retail stores, we inadvertently support and perpetuate these inhumane practices.

Banning the sale of pets in retail stores would not only help combat the cruel conditions within these breeding facilities but also encourage pet adoption, a more humane and sustainable option. Adopting from shelters or rescues ensures that more animals find a loving home, and adoption can decrease the significant number of pets euthanized each year due to overcrowded facilities.

Furthermore, by focusing on promoting responsible pet ownership and supporting shelters and rescues, Iowa City can lead a compassionate movement in animal welfare that sets a precedent for neighboring regions to follow.

Let's make Iowa City a trailblazer in animal protection and welfare. Support this petition to urge our city leaders to ban the sale of pets in retail stores, lending our voices to the voiceless and paving the way for a kinder future for animals. Please sign and share this petition to create real change for animals in our community.
