The Issue

As a dog owner and a proud member of the Saddleworth community, I have witnessed firsthand the distress and destruction caused by the reckless use of fireworks. My beloved pet suffers from immense anxiety due to the constant barrage of fireworks exploding throughout the year. It's not just during holidays; the noise and chaos they bring seem to have no end. This isn't just a personal inconvenience—it's a community-wide issue that affects our environmental and public safety.

Recently, we have experienced the devastating effects of moor fires over Dovestones Reservoir, caused by irresponsible individuals using fireworks. This tragic incident is yet another reminder of how urgently we need to address this issue, especially as it follows a recent debate in which the matter remained unresolved. Our beautiful landscapes are put at risk, and the safety of our communities is compromised. These fires have not only endangered our town but the wildlife and natural beauty that define this part of the country.

Fireworks sales to the general public have spun out of control, and we need substantial legislative change. Local councils need firm powers to regulate who can buy, sell, and set off fireworks. Licensing should be mandatory for organized displays only, ensuring that experts handle fireworks, minimizing the risk to both people and the environment.

Statistics show that fireworks-related injuries increase significantly every year. According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, thousands of incidents are reported across the UK involving both humans and pets who suffer injuries due to neglect and misuse. It's time we change the narrative and bring an end to this preventable chaos.

I urge you to sign this petition to protect the tranquility of our homes, the safety of our pets, and the integrity of our landscapes. Let's demand action before another senseless accident occurs. Sign now to ensure our councils can protect our community and environment from the dangers of unsupervised fireworks use.
