Ban the Sale and Breeding of Dogs & Cats in India — Promote Adoption of Indie Animals

Ban the Sale and Breeding of Dogs & Cats in India — Promote Adoption of Indie Animals
The Issue
Petition to:
Government of India | Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying | Animal Welfare Board of India
Why This Petition Matters
Dogs and cats are not commodities. Yet across India, they are bred, sold, transported, confined, and discarded for profit—while millions of Indian native (Indie) dogs and cats suffer on the streets, in shelters, or die unnoticed.
Commercial breeding prioritises money over life. It fuels cruelty, genetic illness, illegal trade, and mass abandonment. This system must end.
The Reality We Can’t Ignore
Breeding centres operate with minimal oversight, causing lifelong suffering
Pet shops and online sellers treat living beings like products
Overpopulation is driven by human exploitation, not animals
Indie dogs and cats—healthy, intelligent, and loyal—are ignored because they are not “pedigreed”
India cannot claim compassion while allowing animals to be bought and sold.
What We Are Demanding
We urge the Government of India to:
Ban all commercial breeding of dogs and cats
Shut down all pet shops and online platforms selling dogs and cats
Adopt an adoption-only policy for acquiring companion animals
Rehabilitate and rehome animals currently in breeding centres and pet shops
Launch a national campaign to promote adoption of Indie dogs and cats
Provide free or subsidised sterilisation, vaccination, and basic healthcare for adopted Indie animals
Enforce strict penalties for illegal breeding, sale, and trafficking
Criminalise abandonment as an act of animal cruelty
Why Indie Animals Deserve Homes
Indian native dogs and cats are:
Naturally suited to India’s climate
Less prone to genetic diseases
Loving, loyal, and deeply intelligent
They deserve care—not rejection because they don’t have a price tag.
Our Message to Lawmakers
If profit decides who gets to live with dignity, compassion has already failed.
A humane India adopts. It does not buy.
