Ban the Release of Balloons to Protect Our Wildlife and Environment

The Issue

I personally saw a group of people go into a wildlife preserve to release balloons.  Of all places!  Releasing Balloons is an action often conceived as benign and festive has serious implications for our wildlife and our environment. When balloons are released, they can travel a long way before they burst and fall back to Earth. They end up in our oceans and wild lands becoming a deadly threat for our wildlife.

Studies indicate that around 100,000 marine animals die each year due to plastic debris, and balloons are a significant part of it (source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency). They are mistakenly ingested as food by creatures such as sea turtles, dolphins, and birds, causing intestinal blockage and eventual death. Additionally, the non-degradable latex and ribbons can entangle and strangle wildlife.

The environmental impact is equally devastating. Degradation of latex balloons is a slow process; it can take up to 4 years in freshwater and more than 1 year in seawater (source: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). The remnants contribute to the increasing plastic pollution we battle against in our efforts to combat climate change and restore planet health.

Making a change starts with us. It is essential that we seek other ways to celebrate that do not harm our environment and wildlife. By banning the release of balloons, we are taking a stand for our seas, for our wildlife, and for our Earth. Creating sustainable practices should be our primary focus. It starts with this first step, it begins with your signature. Please, sign the petition today.
