The Issue

Montauk, NY, a serene fishing destination known for its natural beauty and vibrant local community, is under threat from the annual Mr Poseidon Striper Challenge fishing tournament. This event, which attracts an overwhelming number of participants, has become a source of frustration for local residents and the surfcasting community.

The tournament results in crowded beaches, which in turn leads to debris and garbage being irresponsibly strewn across our once-pristine sands. The influx of visitors often includes individuals who disrespect local ordinances—engaging in public urination and bypassing local 4x4 permit requirements, ultimately disrupting the balance between residents and the local fishing community. Theft of fishing equipment from local fishermen has occurred at the last two previous years tournaments. This is unheard of in our small community the remainder of the fishing season.

The impact of the tournament is not just environmental. It poses a significant strain on the local surfcasting community, as the flood of out-of-state fishermen disregards the rules and traditions of Montauk's waters. This influx extends beyond mere inconvenience, potentially damaging the delicate balance of our local ecosystems and impacting the fish population that our community relies upon.

It is imperative that we protect Montauk, its natural environment, and its community. The surfcasting community has fought for years to keep their rights on the east end. It has not come with ease. The threat of law changes for access, parking and camping is always looming. This tournament brings in folks who disregard almost every rule and threaten our privilege to fish out here. We propose the complete removal of the Mr Poseidon Striper Challenge from Montauk, or at the very least, a stringent revision of the tournament's policies to respect our local laws and preserve our beaches. These steps are crucial to ensuring that Montauk remains a clean, safe, and enjoyable place for residents and respectful fisherman alike.

Join us in urging local authorities and event organizers to heed our concerns. By signing this petition, you support a cleaner and more respectful Montauk. Let us preserve the beauty and harmony of our community by keeping the Mr Poseidon Striper Challenge out of our treasured corner of New York.
