Noise cameras are a way off but please keep reporting

Even if the Noise Cameras prove successful, implementation by the NSW Government will still take time. We all appreciate how frustrating that is — but we will not be deterred. Together, we will continue taking action at every level to end this hooning issue once and for all.

We are grateful to Robert Hansen for following up directly with the EPA on the progress of the Noise Camera Trials.

Hi everyone,

I spoke with a rather officious EPA officer who said “you can speak to me” when I asked if I could be put in touch with the person managing the noise camera trial.

When I said I understood the results of the trial were due to be announced soon, I was told that it is still not clear if the technology works or not. Reference was made to a particular problem with isolating the noise from one vehicle when other vehicles are nearby.

It was also made clear to me that even if the EPA recommends continuing with noise cameras, it will not happen straightaway, as NSW Government legislative changes will be required.

I asked how the locations for noise cameras would be chosen if the program proceeds. I was told: “based on areas of greatest need.”

When I asked how that would be determined, the officer urged me to get residents to register our area of interest by emailing:

I will continue making calls in the coming days and weeks. I may even visit their Parramatta office to try to speak with someone in person. Registering the Barangaroo–Walsh Bay area online is certainly worthwhile — there’s plenty of time to do this.

I can also prepare something that residents across the area can send in to strengthen our case. Do you think that idea has merit?
