The Issue

I am an animal lover and strongly believe that animals should not be used to make money for sport. It deeply troubles me to see the cruelties involved in events such as the Grand National, where horses are subjected to distressing conditions and sometimes even fatal outcomes. Too often, these majestic animals face whipping to force them to run faster, endure towering fences, and be pushed to complete excessively long courses that stretch their endurance to dangerous limits.

The Grand National has long been under scrutiny for its harsh conditions that lead to injury and the occasional, heartbreaking need to euthanize horses that suffer severe injuries during the race. According to a report published by the British Horse Racing Authority, about 11 horses die every year as a result of racing in the UK, emphasizing the need for reform.

High-profile incidents have brought the plight of these animals to public attention. For example, in the last decade, multiple horses have died during the Grand National race itself. Despite these tragic events, reforms remain superficial, prioritizing tradition and profit over animal welfare.

Beyond statistics and reports, the moral implications of using animals for financial gains in such brutal sports are significant. The emotional bond and empathy we should extend towards these animals are lost amidst the cheering crowds and betting exchanges.

The simple truth is that no sport should compromise the safety and well-being of its participants, irrespective of whether they are human or animal. Beyond the Grand National, greyhound racing also falls under this category, where animals are exploited for the sake of monetary gains.

We demand that sponsors, organizers, and the government take immediate and concrete actions to ban the Grand National, setting a precedent for a more humane approach to animal-involved sports. We call on them to enact legislation that protects these animals and brings an end to profit-driven cruelty.

Please join me in putting an end to this inhumane practice by signing this petition. Together, we can stand up for animal rights and ensure that no more lives are lost for mere entertainment. Your signature can help drive the change needed to protect the welfare of these animals.
