The Issue

For millions of Iranians, the flag of the Islamic Republic is not a symbol of a nation. It is a symbol of repression, corruption, executions, and the suffering of innocent people. Under this flag, protesters have been killed, political prisoners have been executed, and even minors have faced death sentences. This symbol should not be normalized in a country that stands for freedom and human rights.

We, the undersigned, call on U.S. policymakers, institutions, and human rights advocates to recognize that the flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran is closely associated with a regime responsible for severe human rights violations.

For millions of Iranians and Iranian Americans, this flag does not represent culture or national heritage. Instead, it represents a government that has imprisoned innocent people on fabricated charges, violently suppressed peaceful protests, and carried out executions against its own citizens.

Human rights organizations have repeatedly documented that under this regime individuals including minors under the age of 18 have faced death sentences and executions. Children and teenagers have been executed simply because they demanded freedom, justice, and basic human dignity.

Political prisoners, journalists, women’s rights activists, and ordinary protesters have been jailed, tortured, or killed simply for demanding freedom, dignity, justice, and a fair and balanced economy that allows people to live with stability and opportunity.

For many victims and their families, the flag of the Islamic Republic has become a symbol of state violence, systemic corruption, and abuse of power. It represents a system that has silenced dissent and punished those who stand up for basic human rights.

Allowing this flag to be displayed in ways that promote or normalize the regime can be deeply painful and intimidating for members of the Iranian diaspora who fled persecution and oppression.

We urge U.S. institutions and policymakers to review existing policies and consider measures that prevent the use of the Islamic Republic’s flag as a symbol that glorifies or legitimizes a regime responsible for serious human rights abuses.

This petition stands in solidarity with the people of Iran who seek freedom, democracy, accountability, respect for human dignity, and a balanced and fair economy that allows citizens to live with dignity.

Key Human Rights Concerns

  • Imprisonment of innocent citizens on politically motivated or fabricated charges
  • Execution of political prisoners and protesters
  • Death sentences and executions involving individuals who were minors
  • Systemic corruption and abuse of power
  • Suppression of peaceful protests and civil liberties
  • Sponsoring proxies and terrorists around the world

Our Message

  1.  We stand with the people of Iran, not with the regime that oppresses them.
  2. Freedom, human dignity, human rights, and economic justice must always be defended.
  3. No child or teenager should ever face death for demanding freedom.
  4. The wealth and resources of the country should never be used to fund the killing and oppression of innocent people around the world.
