I am deeply upset and worried about the proposed construction of the AI data center in Amarillo, Texas, Project Matador. This AI data center poses significant threats to our environment, community, and heritage. The potential, irreversible damage could go beyond our city to impact the entire Texas Panhandle.

The introduction of such a large AI data center means an increase in energy consumption and water usage. Amarillo has a delicate ecosystem that cannot support such drastic demands without detrimental effects on local wildlife and natural resources. Current studies, like those from the U.S. Department of Energy, show that data centers in the U.S. account for about 2% of the total electricity use annually, and the numbers keep rising. The strain this would place on our already limited resources is unprecedented.

Additionally, to the environmental impact, there’s the risk to our local wildlife. Many species are already struggling due to habitat loss and climate change and with the building of this center their struggle would only increase. Noise pollution, potential chemical leaks, and increased human activity could further endanger these valuable ecosystems.

Moreover, the increased infrastructure could result in the displacement of local communities. To ignore their voice in this decision is to undermine the very foundation on which our city thrives.

Though, technological advancement is tempting, it should not come at the cost of irreversible harm to our environment and community. We urge the local government to reconsider Project Matador and instead invest in sustainable alternatives that protect our resources while fostering innovation.
