The Issue

Growing up, I faced abuse from my mother and became increasingly mentally unstable. At a vulnerable age of 11, I found myself being misled by certain ideologies that made me question my identity. After much mental work, I rediscovered who I genuinely am and recognized the potential harm of exposing children to complex ideas too early. Children, particularly in elementary and middle school, deserve to have a childhood free from unnecessary confusion and should instead be supported to thrive in a healthy environment.

In recent years, there has been a surge in discussions around gender identity in educational settings, often not tailored for the developmental stages of young students. While the intention may be well-meaning, the impact on impressionable minds can sometimes be detrimental. Studies have shown that children exposed to ideas beyond their comprehension at a young age can experience confusion and distress, which may worsen existing mental health challenges.

Mental health support should be prioritized. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 49.5% of adolescents have a mental disorder, and a significant number of these cases develop by age 14. Schools should focus on providing robust mental health programs that include resources like counseling, emotional wellness workshops, and support systems tailored to their developmental needs.

This petition calls for educational curriculums to prioritize mental health over potentially complex and controversial topics for young learners. By doing so, we can create a safer, more understanding environment for children who are still learning about themselves and the world around them. Complex and sensitive topics, such as transgender identity, are best left to parents to decide when and how to introduce to this their children outside of the school setting.

I call upon the educational policymakers to enact an age-appropriate curriculum and environment that accounts for shielding our young learners while amplifying mental health resources within schools. Your signature can help make a crucial change towards fostering a supportive and nurturing educational environment for all children. Please sign this petition to advocate for a balanced approach to education that truly supports our children’s well-being.
