Ban styrofoam products in Hilton Head Island, SC

The Issue

Hilton Head Island, SC is a beautiful place that attracts tourists from all over the world. However, the use of styrofoam products on the island is causing harm to our environment and wildlife. We need to take action now and ban styrofoam products in Hilton Head Island.

Styrofoam takes hundreds of years to decompose and it is not biodegradable. It breaks down into small pieces that are often mistaken for food by marine animals, causing them harm or even death. According to a study by Ocean Conservancy, plastic foam ranks as one of the top 10 most common items found during beach cleanups.

In addition, styrofoam production contributes significantly to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. The manufacturing process releases toxic chemicals into the air which can cause respiratory problems for workers and nearby residents.

Many cities across the United States have already banned styrofoam products including Seattle, San Francisco, and Portland. It’s time for Hilton Head Island to follow suit.

There are many alternatives available such as paper-based products or reusable containers made from materials like glass or stainless steel. These options are more environmentally friendly and sustainable in the long run.

Let’s take action now before it’s too late! Sign this petition urging Hilton Head Island officials to ban styrofoam products on our island for a cleaner environment and safer wildlife habitats.
