Ban Styrofoam from Penn State Campuses

The Issue

As of 2017, University Park produces 495,000 styrofoam to-go containers annually. Penn State made a commitment to sustainability by introducing a re-usable to-go option (Green2Go) that was discontinued in Fall 2020 due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, the dining halls have relied on styrofoam containers to provide students with every meal and the annual amount produced has undoubtedly skyrocketed. Reliance on styrofoam is unsustainable for our environment as it is the 5th largest source of hazardous waste. This contributes to the formation of ozone ultimately resulting in climate change. Styrofoam takes more than 500 years to decay and should be replaced with biodegradable options instead. Sign the petition to demand Penn State ban styrofoam from all campuses and use Fall 2021 as an opportunity to begin using sustainable alternatives.
