Businesses for the Ban on Styrofoam Food Containers in NYC!
0 have signed. Let’s get to 500!
It’s time to ban polystyrene (Styrofoam) foam food containers in New York City! We're asking for food service establishments, restaurants, corporations and other businesses to sign on to support NYC Council bill Intro 1596, which would restrict the sale of polystyrene foam food containers, and to oppose Intro 1480, a phony recycling bill, which aims to unrealistically mandate NYC to recycle polystyrene. To sign this petition, you must be a valid representative of the signing company.
Expanded polystyrene (“EPS”) foam is a non-sustainable, non-biodegradable, petroleum-based plastic material. Styrene is a known carcinogen. EPS composition allows it to break up into tiny pieces, polluting city streets and waterways. Fish then mistake the plastic for food, traveling up the food chain into the fish we buy, sell and eat every day.
Organizations such as the Natural Resources Defense Council, New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, and WeAct for Environmental Justice have joined forces with solid waste and recycling experts to strongly oppose Intro 1480, an industry-inspired bill that runs counter to recent efforts by the NYC Department of Sanitation to rid our communities of unnecessary waste. The agency recently concluded that recycling polystyrene foam in New York City cannot be accomplished in an economically feasible and environmentally effective manner. The agency’s full analysis is available here.
Now we urge food service establishments and businesses in NYC to voice their opposition to Intro 1480 and instead move to ban these litter- and pollution-generating containers by supporting Intro 1596. There are many other alternatives to polystyrene take out containers including paper products, cardboard, and reusable plastic containers. Intro 1596 includes a renewable waiver option for any establishment that proves it cannot afford an alternative container.
With your signature as a representative of your company, we will send a letter to NYC Council Speaker Mark-Viverito to say you stand up for the environment and for the communities you operate in; that you stand up to the plastics foam lobby; that you are prepared to make a switch from single-use polystyrene foam food and beverage containers to a more sustainable option.
When Intro 1596 is passed, NYC will join over 100 other communities around the nation that have banned the use of this toxic product.
Thank you so much and we look forward to getting rid of this pesky material once and for all in NYC!
