Ban 'space-based' euthanasia of adoptable German shepherds in California

The Issue

In California, countless adoptable German shepherds are facing euthanasia, not due to illness, aggression, or unadoptable behaviors, but merely because of a lack of space in animal shelters. This heartbreaking reality must change. These dogs, full of potential and waiting for a forever family, are put down simply because our system fails to prioritize life-saving alternatives.

Every day, shelters across California are inundated with animals, leading to a tragic practice known as 'space-based' euthanasia. This method, as the term suggests, results in the unnecessary death of healthy, adoptable dogs to make room for more incoming animals. It's an outdated practice that disregards the value of life and the potential happiness each dog can bring to a future owner.

Statistics from the California Department of Public Health show that over 100,000 dogs were euthanized in 2022 alone, with a significant percentage being healthy, adoptable German shepherds. These figures speak volumes about an urgent need for reform. Fostering, rescue transfers, and transport programs have time and again shown their effectiveness in reducing euthanasia rates, yet they are not maximized statewide.

California needs a statewide mandate that prohibits the euthanasia of adoptable German shepherds purely for space constraints. We can implement solutions that have already proven successful in other states. For instance, in New York, legislation requires that before any animal is euthanized for space, all efforts for alternative placement through rescue organizations, foster homes, or out-of-state transport must be exhausted. This law has significantly reduced euthanasia rates, offering thousands of dogs a second chance at life.

By enforcing a similar law in California, we could focus on expanding partnerships with local rescues, increasing community foster programs, and investing in transport options to move dogs to less crowded shelters or states where adoptions are on the rise. Furthermore, public awareness campaigns could increase adoption rates and community involvement in solving this ongoing crisis.

The dogs' lives literally depend on the actions we take now. Please join us in advocating for a humane and compassionate solution to space-based euthanasia of adoptable German shepherds in California. Your signature can help ignite the change needed to usher in a more humane era for our beloved companions.
