The Issue

In today's digital age, social media is a powerful tool for sharing stories, connecting with loved ones, and even shaping public opinion. However, it has become increasingly concerning to see individuals with criminal convictions, especially those who have committed serious offenses like murder, using these platforms to rebrand themselves as influencers.

As someone who deeply values the safety and well-being of younger generations, I am disturbed by this trend. The fact that individuals like Gypsy Rose Blanchard can parade themselves online not as individuals seeking accountability and change, but as pop culture phenomena, is alarming. This is not about endorsing cancel culture this is about understanding the impact and consequences of one's actions.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard, known for her deeply disturbing past, is gaining attention not because of any genuine change or accountability, but due to the internet's relentless thirst for redemption arcs. It's as if the serious nature of her past actions is being overshadowed by her ability to craft a new image.

This trend sets a dangerous precedent, normalizing the idea that serious past crimes can be overshadowed by a carefully crafted online persona. What message does this send to our children and teenagers? That if you manage your social media presence well enough, any past actions can be overlooked?

The normalization of ex-convicts turning into influencers is frightening. These platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, have immense power in shaping the minds of their users, particularly impressionable younger audiences. Allowing individuals with severe criminal pasts to have a platform and following poses a potential risk to society and undermines the efforts of those who truly seek rehabilitation and redemption without the glare of the limelight.

It is crucial for social media companies to implement stricter regulations and guidelines for platform access, especially for those with serious criminal backgrounds. By doing so, we can ensure that social media remains a space that promotes positivity, true accountability and safe interactions for all users.

Join me in urging major social media platforms to ban accounts belonging to individuals with serious criminal convictions. Let us take action before we normalize yet another dangerous trend. Sign this petition to demand changes now.

UPDATE: This Is Not a Blanket Ban  It’s About the Most Serious Offenders

Thank you so much to everyone who has signed and supported this petition so far. I want to take a moment to clear up an important point.

PLEASE NOTE: This petition is not calling for a lifetime social media ban for all ex convicts.

We fully acknowledge that many people who have served their time go on to live quietly, contribute positively to society and never reoffend. Those individuals deserve the opportunity to rebuild their lives.

What this petition is about:

A lifetime ban from social media for individuals convicted of the most serious crimes including murder, rape, child abuse, sex trafficking and the manipulation or orchestration of crimes only when they attempt to return to public platforms to gain fame, profit or manipulate public perception.

We are calling for case by case reviews, not blanket rules.

This would involve reviewing the nature of the crime, the harm caused and the individual’s intentions upon reentering public life. The goal is to stop social media from becoming a stage for reoffenders or those seeking to glorify or capitalise on horrific crimes.

This is about protecting survivors, preventing exploitation and holding boundaries around who is given influence online.

Thank you again for standing behind this message. Please continue to share, post and speak out together, we can make a real difference.
