Ban social media for children under age 16 in India

Ban social media for children under age 16 in India
The Issue
As a responsible citizen deeply concerned about the future of our society and the generations to come, I feel compelled to address the pressing issue of children's exposure to social media and online gaming in India. Living in a joint family, I have witnessed the adverse effects these platforms have on my young siblings, whose lives have been significantly impacted due to their usage of over screening, online gaming, online social media accounts. The rise in cybercrime has left many children vulnerable, and stories of young lives lost to cyberbullying and other digital threats deeply wrench my soul.
Research indicates that the prefrontal cortex of the human brain, which governs decision-making and impulse control, is not fully developed until one's mid-twenties. This neurological fact underlines why children are more susceptible to impulsive behavior, emotional volatility, and peer pressure. Allowing unrestricted access to social media and online gaming exacerbates these vulnerabilities, putting children at great risk.
In light of this, I propose a nationwide ban on the use of social media and online gaming for children under the age of 16 in India. This regulation should not fall as a burden on parents or children but must be enforced primarily by social media companies operating within the country. These companies possess the technological resources and capabilities to ensure compliance by integrating age-verification mechanisms and monitoring usage patterns to protect young users.
The proposed ban aims to shield our younger generation from potential harm, fostering a safer online environment and contributing to their mental and emotional well-being. While acknowledging the positive aspects of connectivity and learning that the digital world offers, we must prioritize safety and the healthy development of our children. By collectively working together, we can create a positive change and secure a brighter future for all.
I urge you to support this movement by signing the petition and calling upon Indian authorities to implement and enforce this essential policy. Together, we can champion the cause of our youth’s safety and secure a healthier digital landscape for generations to come. Your signature can make a difference.
