Ban Social Media Access for Those Under 18

Le problème

Our children face a new and unprecedented threat: social media. It is painful to see young ones fall prey to the serious challenges this digital reality presents including cyber exploitation and escalated mental health issues. The impact of social media on youth has even been linked to a rise in depression, anxiety, and decreased social skills. This is why I, a deeply concerned parent, plead for a ban on social media access for those under 18. This push doesn't come lightly. A study by NCBI indicates that excessive social media usage can potentially lead to negative mental health outcomes in adolescents, making this issue a significant concern for our growing generation. The time to protect our children is now. Act alongside us to safeguard the future generation from the detrimental impacts of social media exposure. Please, sign this petition, help us raise awareness, and be a part of the change.

Social media does more harm than good, especially when it comes to our children:

🧠 Mental Health Concerns
Increased Anxiety and Depression
Social media use has been linked to heightened rates of anxiety, depression, and loneliness in teens.
Body Image Issues
Exposure to idealized and filtered images can negatively affect self-esteem and body image, especially in adolescents.
Addiction and Compulsive Use
Platforms are designed to be addictive, often leading to compulsive checking, which disrupts daily life and sleep.

🧒 Developmental and Cognitive Risks
Underdeveloped Critical Thinking
Children and teens are still developing the ability to think critically and distinguish between reliable and misleading content.
Impacts on Focus and Attention Span
Constant notifications and rapid scrolling habits reduce attention span and the ability to concentrate.
Inhibits Real-World Social Skills
Online interactions can replace or reduce face-to-face communication, hampering the development of empathy and social intelligence.

🔒 Safety and Privacy Risks
Exposure to Predators and Grooming
Social media platforms are often places where predators seek to contact and exploit minors.
Cyberbullying
Kids are particularly vulnerable to online harassment, which can be relentless and emotionally devastating.
Privacy Violations
Young users may overshare personal information, not fully understanding the long-term consequences.
Exploitation and Scams
Children can be easily targeted by scams, manipulated into inappropriate behavior, or even exploited for data and advertising.

📱 Unrealistic Life Comparisons
FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)
Seeing peers' highlight reels can make kids feel left out, inadequate, or like they’re missing something.
False Reality and Validation-Seeking
Likes and followers become measures of self-worth, creating dependency on external validation.

⚖️ Legal and Ethical Considerations
Underage Consent Issues
Children may agree to terms they don’t fully understand, giving away rights or data.
COPPA & Data Collection Violations
Platforms often skirt laws like the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act by encouraging underage sign-ups without proper protections.
Difficulty in Parental Oversight
It's hard for parents to monitor every app or interaction, making full supervision nearly impossible.

⏳ Long-Term Impact
Digital Footprint Concerns
Kids might post things they regret later, not realizing that digital mistakes can follow them into adulthood.
Stunted Identity Formation
Social media can pressure kids to adopt a persona rather than explore and develop their true self.
Delayed Emotional Maturity
Constant exposure to online drama or dopamine-driven engagement may delay emotional growth and resilience.
