Ban smoking in shared residential buildings
Ban smoking in shared residential buildings
The Issue
Secondhand smoke is a grave health risk that threatens the wellbeing of everyone, particularly children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. For residents in apartment complexes, duplexes, and other shared living spaces, the risks are magnified as smoke can easily travel through shared walls, ventilation systems, plumbing, and other pathways. Therefore, it is imperative that we take action to protect the right to clean air in all shared residential buildings.
The dangers associated with secondhand smoke exposure are well-documented. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), secondhand smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, hundreds of which are toxic and about 70 that can cause cancer. Exposure to secondhand smoke causes an estimated 41,000 deaths among non-smoking adults and 400 deaths in infants annually in the United States. Additionally, there is no risk-free level of contact with this smoke; even brief exposure can be harmful to health.
To ensure that every resident has access to clean, smoke-free air, a ban on smoking in all shared residential living areas is crucial. This measure would safeguard public health and promote a higher quality of life for all occupants. It is especially important to protect vulnerable groups, including children whose developing lungs are particularly susceptible to the toxins in smoke, and older adults and those with respiratory conditions who may suffer severe complications from such exposure.
We propose implementing a comprehensive policy that prohibits smoking in any residential building where units are connected through walls, ceilings, or other systems that allow smoke to travel between them. This policy should also include the enforcement mechanisms necessary to ensure compliance and education for residents about the importance of smoke-free environments.
By signing this petition, you support the adoption of regulations that uphold the right to a smoke-free home environment for all residents. Let's work together to advocate for a healthier, safer, and more livable home space for us all. Please sign this petition to call on policymakers to enact a ban on smoking in all shared residential complexes.
