Ban Smoking in Public Areas and Save Innocent Pedestrians from the Harms of Secondhand Smo

The Issue

The city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania has the highest percentage of adults who smoke in the population, at 25.2%. This, however, is only the percentage of the adults, and furthermore, the adults who agreed to be surveyed. There are likely hundreds more smokers, along with teenagers who choose to smoke as well.

That being said, there are people who are aware of the dangers of cigarette smoke. However, they are constantly being bombarded with secondhand smoke, which is just as deadly. Inhalation of secondhand smoke can cause the health effects that straight smoking can cause, but also worsen existing health conditions, such as heart disease and asthma.

You may think that the problem can just be solved by going to a No Smoking Zone. However, I have seen people light a cigarette IN a No Smoking Zone. There are people who are employed to ensure the safety of the city's citizens, however, when it comes to smokers, they don't do their jobs. They simply just walk past them, not even asking them to leave the area.

Is it too much for a law-abiding citizen with sensitive lungs to relax at a park without putting their health at risk of secondhand smoke inhalation? If smokers can't respect neither their own health nor the health of others, then smoking should just be banned, or at the very least, have City Officials actually do their job and fine people who smoke in public Non-Smoking areas in the city of Philadelphia.
