The Issue

I was a victim of a robbery which has become all too common in New York City. Brazen criminals aren’t stopping because they are not being held accountable, hiding behind ski masks that leave victims like me with no hope and the police grappling with dead-end cases. These ski mask-wearing criminals are repeatedly committing crimes, knowing that their identities are protected by the masks. This needs to stop.

Wearing ski masks in public places like streets, parks, transportation, and inside businesses in NYC is not just a personal concern; it's a quality of life crisis. We need our community to come together and take action to ban ski masks in public settings for anyone aged 13 and older.

Ski masks in public spaces facilitate anonymity for wrongdoers, making it difficult for law enforcement to hold them accountable. In 2020, NYC reported a significant rise in crimes where perpetrators used face coverings to evade identification. According to NYPD data, robberies increased by 40% compared to previous years, many linked to masked culprits.

Banning ski masks will empower our law enforcement agents with the ability to identify and apprehend criminals more effectively, acting as a deterrent for those seeking to commit crimes under the veil of anonymity. It’s time to reclaim our city streets, parks, and public spaces from the grip of fear and crime.

We urge local lawmakers to consider this measure seriously for the safety and well-being of every New Yorker. By signing this petition, we can make our voices heard and push for a safer, more secure community. Sign now to help bring about this essential change.
