Ban SJP at Stanford

The Issue

Antisemitism is on the rise at Stanford University. In just the past month, we have witnessed swastikas in student dorms and hate speech written across campus property. This is not only deeply disturbing but threatens our undergraduate community to the point that they feel unsafe on campus. It is unacceptable that Stanford-affiliated organizations are actively contributing towards the spread of antisemitism and hate. One such organization is the Stanford Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP).

Since October 7th, SJP has hosted events that have contributed to an environment of hostility and discrimination against Jewish students. In several SJP-organized events, students are quoted standing in support of Hamas, an internationally recognized terror organization; one student said, “to all the people asking us to condemn Hamas, f*ck you bro….we agree with them. I am so proud of my resistance. I have never been more proud to be Palestinian.” At an SJP-organized rally, a speaker addressed the crowd, stating, “on campuses including this one, people’s resistance is met through doxing, harassment, and intimidation campaigns which endanger Palestinian lives. What is there left to do but to take up arms?” SJP has repeatedly demonized Israeli, Jewish, and pro-Israel students on campus, making Jewish students feel unsafe. This goes against the principles of inclusivity and respect that our institution stands for.

Most recently, SJP started a public petition in support of Ameer Hassan Loggins, an antisemitic lecturer who deliberately targeted and shamed Jewish and Israeli students based on their identity, only a few days after the October 7th attacks. SJP is inappropriately denying the testimonies of Jewish students in the class who corroborate that they felt targeted and discriminated against – testimonies that have been verified by the New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle. Notably, this incident marks a disturbing departure from SJP’s focus on Palestinian activism, and demonstrates their commitment to antagonize and gaslight the Jewish population on campus instead. This is unacceptable.

We call upon the Stanford University administration to prohibit SJP from hosting future events on campus until they demonstrate a commitment towards fostering an inclusive environment free from hate speech or discriminatory practices. We urge Stanford to follow in the steps of Columbia, Brandeis, and George Washington University, who have already suspended their schools’ chapters of SJP.

We urge you to stand with us against antisemitism and hate at Stanford University by signing this petition today.
