I often go on hikes and kayaking trips throughout Ohio and see nothing but Styrofoam containers polluting our waters. It's disheartening to witness the lasting damage caused by single-use Styrofoam containers clogging our beautiful rivers and lakes. Unlike other materials, Styrofoam does not break down over time, leading to chronic pollution in our cherished natural habitats.

Styrofoam, or polystyrene foam, is a petroleum-based plastic that is difficult to recycle and can persist in the environment for hundreds of years. When these containers make their way into our water systems, they not only mar the landscape but can also break down into microplastics, which are consumed by aquatic life and can enter the food chain, impacting both wildlife and human health.

Ohio is blessed with vast natural parks and water bodies that support a rich diversity of life. Our wildlife, including fish and birds, are at risk from accidentally ingesting Styrofoam particles, mistaking them for food. The consequences are severe, leading to malnutrition or even death of these animals. Moreover, Styrofoam manufacturing contributes to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbating climate change.

Many communities are leading the charge to eliminate Styrofoam waste by enacting bans on single-use Styrofoam containers, and it is time for Ohio to join this movement. Cities like New York, Seattle, and Washington D.C. have successfully implemented such bans, providing a blueprint for similar actions here.

Transitioning away from Styrofoam does not mean we have to compromise on convenience. There are numerous sustainable alternatives available, such as compostable containers made from materials like corn starch, bamboo, or recycled paper. Encouraging businesses to shift towards these environmentally friendly options can significantly reduce Ohio's ecological footprint.

I urge policymakers to take decisive action to protect Ohio's environment and its citizens by banning single-use Styrofoam containers. By doing so, we can pave the way towards a cleaner, healthier future for ourselves, our wildlife, and generations to come.
