My name is Kojovi Edem Abba, a Media Consultant from Ghana and an advocate for the ban on single-use plastic in my country. After losing friends and family to the regular annual flooding of major cities and towns in my country, I decided to lead the charge for a change that could affect our lives positively in my country and the rest of the world. 

Single-use plastics are extremely dangerous to both humans and the environment. 

According to a 2021 annual report by Global Plastic Action Partnership, about 380 million metric tons of plastic are produced annually across the world. It is projected that 1.3 billion metric tons of plastic will be produced worldwide by 2050. Plastic pollution continues to negatively impact land, oceans, human health, and climate due to the mismanagement of plastics after use and a low global average recycling rate of 14%. https://www.globalplasticaction.org/home

Ghana alone generates around 1.1 million tons of plastic waste per year, 5% of which is collected for recycling, and less than 2% of that actually gets recycled. https://www.globalplasticaction.org/ghana

These plastics take hundreds of years to decompose, and the chemicals used in their manufacture are toxic, causing harm to the lungs and nervous system if ingested.

Banning single-use plastic can help us save the environment. We can adopt the use of paper bags as an alternative for grocery shopping as a measure to immediately curb the uncontrolled influx of plastic. 

We must act now because time is running out.
