The Issue

The beauty of nature, the serenity of the wilderness, and a desire for peace - these are the things most visitors to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park seek. As someone who cherishes the tranquility and natural splendor of our national parks, I am deeply concerned about the impact that excessive vehicle traffic, particularly from ATVs and side-by-sides, has on these precious environments.

ATVs and side-by-side rentals bring more than just noise and disruption; they inflict damage on the shoulders, pull offs, and aging infrastructure that is paramount to accessing the park's interior. The Smokies, with over 11 million visitors each year, is already experiencing overcrowding, which threatens the very essence of what makes these parks so special. Recreational vehicles that are loud and invasive exacerbate this problem, scaring away wildlife and making it difficult for pedestrians to safely enjoy their experience.

There is significant evidence that motorized vehicles can lead to severe environmental degradation. According to a study by the National Park Service, off-road vehicles contribute to soil erosion, water pollution, and habitat destruction. While GSMNP doesn't offer off road trails, the shoulders are taking a beating from aggressive ATV tread.  Most importantly, the distinctive silence of these parks, once filled with bird songs and the rustle of leaves, is often drowned out by the roar of engines.

Moreover, there is no genuine necessity for such vehicles within the park. The park's vast trail system, perfect for hiking and biking, promotes healthier, more sustainable forms of recreation. Visitors should be encouraged to engage with nature in a way that respects and preserves the experience of nature.

I urge the National Park Service to implement a complete ban on ATVs and side-by-sides in all national parks, with immediate attention to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This action would not only help preserve the ecological balance but also enhance the visitor experience by maintaining the tranquility and natural beauty that national parks are intended to showcase.

Let us act now to protect these national treasures for the enjoyment of all, today and for generations to come. Please join me in advocating for this essential change by signing this petition.
