The Issue

Fish are living animals. Some may be sold for food, but that doesn't mean they don't deserve to live in comfort. Imagine yourself confined in a small box submerged in water, where your every move is restrained and chances of escape are non-existent. Or being shoved into a 10' by 10' room with 100+ people where your only movement is walking in a circles with the rest of the crowd.

Grocery stores across the country are displaying fish in cramped tanks where their well-being is often neglected. These environments fail to meet even the basic needs of the fish, leading to undue stress and suffering. A Specific example are Betta Fish; Betta fish are very sensitive and NEED 5-10 gallon tanks. Grocery stores put them in tiny plastic bowl/cups and they sit in those for who knows how long.

Unlike settings specifically dedicated to aquatic life care, grocery stores usually lack the expertise or resources necessary to maintain proper tank conditions, including appropriate oxygen levels, temperature, and cleanliness. This negligence can cause significant suffering and illness to these creatures.

Even for species meant for consumption, it is imperative we give them a dignified life prior to their intended purpose. Ethically, it stands against humane treatment to subject any creature to such harsh conditions simply because they cannot vocalize their suffering.

Respected animal welfare groups agree; for instance, the Humane Society has documented numerous cases where fish in grocery stores suffered due to insufficient care. These findings reflect a widespread issue demanding immediate action.

Join us in our mission to protect these vulnerable creatures by urging local lawmakers to ban the sale of live fish in grocery stores. Let's extend our compassion to all living beings and hold businesses accountable for prioritizing profit over ethical treatment.

Sign this petition to demand change, to insist that every fish deserves a chance at a humane existence and to ensure that no more fish suffer needlessly within the confines of a grocery store tank.
