Ban retail sales of Puppies (and Kittens) in Clark County (IN)
The Issue
I have a bulldog who is the result of unethical breeding. Seeing her suffer from preventable health problems due to an irresponsible breeding process has been heartbreaking. My personal experience extends beyond just my dog; I have a friend whose puppy mill puppy suffered a tragic fate and passed away too soon. We know the pain of losing a beloved pet who could have had a different life if prioritization of health and ethical breeding practices had been enforced.
Across Kentuckiana, numerous stories echo the same unsettling truth – stories that circulate in local news and online spaces like Reddit, of residents buying pets from retail pet stores like Puppygram in seemingly fine condition, only to discover they are plagued by sicknesses or severe genetic issues that could have been avoided. These conditions, often the result of inadequate testing and poor parental health, are simply unacceptable. Despite pet stores claiming to source their animals from ethical breeders, these claims rarely come with substantiated proof.
With so many animals in local shelters eager for a loving home, it's time to advocate for their adoption over profit-driven sales. That is why I am calling upon Clark County to either reconsider HB-1412 which prohibits cities and towns from banning retail pet store sales - or develop a new ordinance that bans the sale of dogs and cats at pet stores unless they come from our local shelters.
By taking this step, Clarksville will join a growing number of communities making strides toward ethical pet ownership and welfare.
Let us be the voice for those who cannot speak for themselves. Together, we can ensure every pet has the chance to be cherished in a loving home where their health and happiness are prioritized. Join me in signing this petition and help us foster a more ethical and compassionate community.
