Ban Residential Fireworks in Newport

The Issue

I am a resident of Newport, scarred by the negative impacts of fireworks that pervades my town every frequent occasion. Noise pollution, safety threats, environmental damage, trauma to wildlife and those sensitive to loud sounds; these are just few of the many detriments brought about by the incessant use of fireworks.

The potential for damage, harm, and distress that fireworks can cause is significant. For instance, fireworks cause an estimated 19,500 fires per year (National Fire Protection Association)- a testament to their inherent fire risk. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency also indicates that fireworks contribute to environmental pollution through the remnants they leave behind, such as harmful particulate matter and toxic heavy metals. What's more, noise from fireworks can exceed 150 decibels, causing negative impacts on individuals with sensitivities to loud noises, Veterans, individuals suffering from PTSD, the elderly, and young children are at risk for potential harm. This emotional toll is not exclusive to humans, with reports by the Humane Society indicating that the loud explosions often cause profound distress to wildlife and pets.

Kentucky state law prohibits shooting fireworks within 200 feet of a structure, a person or a vehicle. It also prohibits anyone under age 18 from shooting fireworks.

State law also provides that local ordinances can provide further restrictions, which the city of Newport took advantage of in crafting its fireworks ordinance in 2022.

Newport’s 2022 ordinance prohibits shooting fireworks from the public right of way, including sidewalks, streets, parks, playground, baseball fields or park benches.

KRS 227.715 (11) states that fireworks are restricted to those who are over age 18, they cannot be ignited within two hundred (200) feet of any structure, vehicle, or any other person.

KRS 227.702 defines consumer fireworks that apply to the above restrictions as Aerial Devices and Audible Ground Devices

Just this past 4th of July a Newport home caught fire as the result of illegal fireworks. It’s time for our city to enforce the state and local laws on fireworks before someone is seriously injured or killed. Enough is enough!

Our health, safety, environment, and wellbeing must be prioritized above the fleeting spectacle of fireworks!!

Join our call for a more peaceful, safe and environmentally friendly Newport. Please sign this petition to put an end to unregulated fireworks and their hazardous impacts.

In addition to signing this petition, I encourage you to reach out to your elected local officials.
