Ban Public Advertisement by Big Pharma

Ban Public Advertisement by Big Pharma
The Issue
Tired of seeing pharmaceutical ads while watching TV with my children. It's upsetting to witness the normalization of medications being sold as mere consumables, as if they were candy rather than powerful drugs. Every evening, amidst a family show, we are bombarded with ads promising miraculous cures while glossing over potential deadly side effects. This omnipresent barrage of pharmaceutical marketing not only invades the sanctity of our homes but influences our perception of health choices.
Pharmaceutical companies are spending billions on advertising, saturating our media to boost sales. In 2020 alone, the pharmaceutical industry spent approximately $6.58 billion on direct-to-consumer advertisements, saturating television, radio, and print media with messages that compel us to ask doctors for specific branded drugs. This approach is misleading and often prioritizes company profit over patient well-being.
The reality is only two countries in the world, the United States and New Zealand, allow direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical advertising. This practice is banned in every other nation, as it leads to over-medication and prioritizes drugs over other forms of effective, sometimes non-pharmaceutical treatment. By putting profits before patients, these advertisements perpetuate a dangerous culture of self-diagnosis and prescription-seeking behavior.
We must prioritize public health over commercial interests. By banning direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical advertisements, we can help ensure that people make informed health choices based on consultations with licensed professionals, not flashy commercials. Let's protect our families from this intrusive marketing and ensure that the focus remains on genuine, need-based patient care.
Encourage lawmakers to take a stand against pharmaceutical advertising. Join me in urging our government to prohibit the direct advertisement of pharmaceuticals to the public. Sign this petition and be a part of the move towards a healthier, better-informed society.
