The Issue

Fireworks have become a source of frustration and fear in our communities. Veterans who have bravely served our country are often left reliving terrifying experiences because of the loud explosions that mimic the sounds of warfare. The negative effects don't stop at the human level – our beloved wildlife suffers indescribable distress, disrupting their natural behaviors and habitats.

In West Virginia, we pride ourselves on our close-knit communities and respect for nature. Yet every Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve, the tranquility is shattered. Residents overwhelmingly express discontent with the constant noise disturbances. Fireworks not only disrupt peace but pose significant dangers. They are a fire hazard, an unnecessary threat that requires our firefighters to be on high alert, risking their lives.

The havoc wreaked on our domestic pets, especially dogs, is heartbreaking. Every year, countless pets flee in fear, ending up lost or injured. It's time to consider safer, alternative forms of celebration.

Eliminating private fireworks could be a win for our community, reducing the noise, preserving wildlife, and creating a safer environment for all, including our first responders. Public, organized displays could serve as an alternative, allowing trained professionals to manage the activity safely.

We call on our local government in West Virginia to take decisive action to ban private fireworks and protect our veterans, wildlife, pets, and first responders. Please sign this petition to support a safer, more considerate way of celebrating our national holidays. Together, we can make West Virginia a more peaceful place for everyone.
