Ban Politicians from Federal Employee Health Benefits

Ban Politicians from Federal Employee Health Benefits
The Issue
My disabled brother-in-law is going to be taken off Medicaid, the only thing even partially helping him as he is disabled but facing SSA delays. Even on Medicaid, he faces co-pays he can't afford, and it doesn't cover essentials like blood sugar monitors. He worked hard his entire life, starting as a child of sharecroppers, bringing in tobacco before and after school. Tragically, he was exposed to harmful pesticides, and most of his siblings have died before 60 as a result. Despite all this, Congress just voted to take away his care.
Our federal politicians, who make life-altering decisions about our healthcare system, should not be granted privileges they deny to us. By excluding federal politicians and their appointees from federal employee health care and benefits, we may ensure they experience firsthand the outcomes of their legislative decisions and feel the urgency ordinary Americans face daily. Make them pay for their insurance on the open market. Make them pay co-pays. Take away their concierge doctors on call and access to Walter Reed. In other words- make them citizens, and treat them the same way.
Statistics show a staggering number of Americans (approximately 27.5 million in 2018 according to the National Health Interview Survey) are uninsured, and countless others, like my brother-in-law, struggle with insufficient coverage. Yet, those in power remain insulated from these issues. Holding them accountable starts by removing this safety net, compelling them to reform the healthcare system to benefit all citizens.
Our policymakers need a reminder of the real-world repercussions of their choices. If they're forced to endure the same conditions they legislate, they're more likely to spearhead fairer and more effective reforms that will truly benefit everyone — especially those most vulnerable.
By signing this petition, we push for equality in health benefits, ensuring every individual, regardless of their status or position, receives the care they deserve. Let's urge Congress to lead by example and take a step towards healthcare reform that benefits every American. Sign this petition to make a change for millions like my brother-in-law who desperately need our support.
