Ban poison and use humane rat management in Saint Laurent

The Issue

Attracted to the adorable photo of a beautiful little rat on the cover of this week’s Suburban, I was heartbroken to read that the borough of Saint Laurent hires a contractor to place boxes of anticoagulant poison in at least 500 sewers. I live in the Montreal Agglomeration, and I feel deeply saddened by the use of such harmful methods to manage our rat population. The problem is not the rats themselves but the environmental conditions that attract them, such as improperly disposed food waste from local restaurants and deteriorating infrastructure of our sewers.

There are humane and effective alternatives to controlling the rat population without resorting to poison, which not only harms rats but can also affect other wildlife and pets. One such method is exclusion plumbing, which ensures that rats and other animals are prevented from accessing homes or other areas without harming them.

In urban areas around the world, more sustainable and compassionate rodent control strategies are being implemented. New York City, for instance, has begun using innovative non-lethal traps and promoting businesses to adopt better waste management practices to reduce rat infestations without endangering the local fauna.

We urge the officials of Saint Laurent to reconsider their approach and ban the use of anticoagulant poisons. Instead, the borough can foster an environment of humane management by investing in and promoting the use of no-kill methods and encouraging establishments to deploy responsible waste management practices.

By transitioning to humane and sustainable pest management strategies, Saint Laurent has the opportunity to lead by example, demonstrating an ethical commitment to ecological balance while maintaining public health standards and urban infrastructure.

Please help us protect both our wildlife and community by signing this petition to ban poisonous methods and adopt humane, no-kill alternatives. Together, we can make a compassionate change for a better future for all creatures in our community.
