The Issue

In my latest lesson for Introduction to Engineering Design, I discovered a disturbing truth: most plastic products are often thrown out rather than being properly reduced or recycled. As a result, they accumulate in our oceans, forming large patches of floating waste and polluting marine life. Over time, these plastics break down into microplastics, which are ingested by sea animals. These animals, some of which end up in our food chain, expose human consumers to various chronic conditions, such as obesity and diabetes.

This reality hit home when I realized how much plastic waste is generated in my own school, the STEM Innovation Academy of the Oranges. Despite our school's focus on innovation and sustainability, we still use a significant amount of plastic cutlery in our cafeteria. Every meal served with a plastic fork or knife contributes to this growing environmental crisis.

Switching to metal cutlery is a concrete and actionable solution. Metal forks and knives are durable, reusable, and can significantly reduce our school's contribution to plastic pollution. Many educational institutions around the world have already made this transition, reporting not only environmental benefits but also cost savings in the long run.

Moreover, embracing metal cutlery aligns perfectly with the values and educational mission of our academy. It presents an opportunity for students to engage with real-world sustainability issues, promoting a culture of responsibility and innovation.

I urge you to sign this petition to ban the use of plastic cutlery in our school and replace them with sustainable metal alternatives. Together, we can lead by example, reduce plastic waste, protect our oceans, and ensure a healthier future for all. Let’s make STEM Innovation Academy of the Oranges a pioneer in sustainability.
