Ban on Firecrackers for the well being of the environment, sick and the Coming generations.

The Issue

It does not come as a surprise for us to see how polluted the environment of India particularly Delhi has become. This Diwali might have brought some happiness in our lives but we don't realize what harm we're doing to the environment, the sick and the coming generations by burning firecrackers and possibly other harmful products available in the market. The statistical figures are horrific and if we don't take action soon, we might initiate an apocalypse.

According to air quality monitored by the Central Pollution Control Board, PM 2.5 in Delhi went up to 999 in the US Embassy area and 702 in Anand Vihar. In R K Puram, PM 2.5 went up to 643 micrograms which is almost ten times the safe limit of 60 micrograms per cubic metres and PM 10 stood at 999 micrograms per cubic metres which is also way more than the safe limit of 100 micrograms.

We urge not only the responsible authorities but also the citizens to put a ban on firecrackers for a safe future and not be so selfish to realise what harm we are doing to those who aren't even part of this all.

Dear friends, First of all, thank you for raising this issue and actively campaigning for the ban of crackers in Delhi. We acknowledge this is one of the serious problems in the city. I am happy to let you know that the Delhi Government has taken 15 measures to address the pollution crisis in Delhi. This includes the ban of crackers with exceptions to religious events. In a most welcoming step, the Delhi Gurdwara committee has already committed to not use any crackers for Gurpurab celebrations. But this alone is not going to solve the problem that we face together as Delhi. The Delhi Government will shortly have a meeting of all stakeholders including experts and citizens to discuss and put together a holistic action plan for the city. We want a long term sustainable plan to ensure Delhi becomes pollution free and the Government cannot do it without your participation and support. I appeal to you to join hands in the implementation of these steps to curb pollution. Report violations when you see them. Download the app (link below) that the Delhi Government has released for citizens to monitor and report violations on pollution control. When you see garbage being burnt, crackers being burst or construction activities in this time of a ban, use the app to take a picture and report it. The Delhi Government will aim to address this immediately. This is our commitment to ensure a clean Delhi for all of us. I look forward to achieving this goal together.
