Sellersburg, Indiana, is on the verge of a transformation that may not align with the best interests of its residents. The swiftly growing interest from tech companies to establish data centers in clark county, and with the recent proposal presented in Charlestown, we feel the need to get ahead of this happening in Sellersburg. 

 While technology and renewable energy are often viewed positively, it’s crucial to weigh these developments against the potential impacts on our local environment, economy, and community well-being. Data centers, while useful, consume vast amounts of energy and water. Some estimates suggest that a medium-sized data center can consume as much electricity as a small town and can guzzle millions of gallons of water every day to maintain cooling systems. This is not a sustainable option for Sellersburg.

Furthermore, the construction and operation of solar farms could consume large swathes of agricultural land. These lands are part of Sellersburg's heritage and economy, and diverting them to industrial use might disrupt our local food production and alter our landscape permanently. With no clear benefit to the residents, solar farms primarily serve external corporations, providing no guarantees of reduced electricity bills or improved services for our community.

Not only are these developments potentially damaging to our environment and local economy, but they also arise without a comprehensive public discussion to weigh the full implications. Residents deserve a voice in deciding what direction our town embarks on, and it is essential we protect our heritage, resources, and community life against decisions that are driven largely by interests outside our local area.

We are calling for a full and immediate ban on constructing data centers and solar farms in Sellersburg until thorough environmental, economic, and social impact assessments are conducted, and local residents have had the opportunity to voice their perspectives. This way, we ensure that the future development in Sellersburg reflects the needs and wishes of the community that we call home.
