Ban Non-Therapeutic Circumcisions for Minors, Regardless of Parent's Religious Beliefs TN

The Issue

We, the concerned citizens of Tennessee, call upon our state legislators to take immediate action and pass legislation to ban non-therapeutic circumcisions for minors, irrespective of their parents' religious beliefs. We believe that every child has the right to bodily integrity and should not be subjected to unnecessary medical procedures without their informed consent.

Non-therapeutic circumcision refers to the surgical removal of the foreskin from a male infant's penis for reasons other than medical necessity. This practice is primarily performed due to cultural or religious traditions rather than any proven health benefits. While we respect individuals' rights to practice their religion freely, we firmly believe that no person's religious beliefs should infringe upon another individual's bodily autonomy.

Here are some compelling reasons why non-therapeutic circumcisions should be banned for minors in Tennessee:

1. Violation of Personal Autonomy: Non-therapeutic circumcision permanently alters a child's body without their consent or medical need. It denies them the fundamental right to make decisions about their own bodies when they are old enough.

2. Lack of Medical Justification: The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) states that the health benefits associated with circumcision are not significant enough to recommend it as a routine procedure. The risks and potential complications outweigh any potential benefits.

3. Harm and Pain: Circumcision is an invasive procedure that can lead to complications such as infection, excessive bleeding, scarring, loss of sensitivity, and psychological trauma in some cases.

4. Ethical Considerations: Performing non-therapeutic circumcisions on minors raises ethical concerns regarding bodily integrity and human rights violations. Infants are not given sufficient anesthesia.

5. Global Trends: Many countries around the world have already recognized these concerns by banning non-therapeutic circumcisions for minors unless there is a clear medical indication or informed consent from the individual.

By passing legislation to ban non-therapeutic circumcisions for minors, Tennessee would join other progressive states in protecting the rights and well-being of its youngest citizens. This ban would ensure that children are given the opportunity to make informed decisions about their own bodies when they reach an appropriate age.

We urge our state legislators to prioritize the protection of children's rights and pass this crucial legislation. Let us stand together as a community and advocate for the bodily autonomy and well-being of all minors in Tennessee.
