Ban no-pet policies in Nova Scotia rental agreements

The Issue
In my quest to find a place to call home, I’ve encountered an obstacle that many pet owners in Nova Scotia are all too familiar with: the restrictive "no pets" policies enforced in rental agreements and leased land home purchases. My circumstance is particularly frustrating—I am unable to buy a home in a leased land trailer or mini home park simply because of my dog's size and breed.
Pets are an integral part of many families. They provide companionship, emotional support, and joy. However, current Nova Scotia laws allow landlords to impose blanket bans on pet ownership within their properties. These policies not only divide families but also enhance the difficulty for potential homeowners and tenants to find suitable living arrangements.
The European pet policies provide a model from which we can learn. Countries like Germany and Belgium have laws that are more permissive of pets, significantly limiting landlords’ ability to impose no-pet rules. In Nova Scotia, it’s time we follow suit and advocate for updated housing policies that accommodate pet owners.
The change we are advocating for is multi-faceted but simple. Firstly, the Nova Scotia government should prohibit "no pets" clauses in both traditional rental agreements and contracts for home purchases on leased lands. In tandem with this, we require safeguards to assure landlords that any potential damage caused by pets will be transparently addressed and compensated if proof is provided by the landlord.
By implementing these changes, Nova Scotia will facilitate a more inclusive and fair society, aligning with our cultural values that respect the bond between humans and their pets. Furthermore, protecting landlords with fair compensation policies ensures a balanced approach that addresses the concerns of both parties.
As residents of Nova Scotia who believe in fair housing and pet-friendly communities, we call on you to sign this petition. Let's make Nova Scotia a place where everyone, including our beloved pets, can find a home.
