Ban New Zealand hunting cats competition

Ban New Zealand hunting cats competition
The Issue
I am a devoted animal lover, sharing my life with both cats and dogs. I was appalled to hear of New Zealand's hunting competition involving cats, which reflects extreme cruelty and a disregard for animal welfare. Such events not only endanger domestic pets and wildlife but also foster an environment that trivializes the lives of sentient beings.
New Zealand has long been recognized for its commitment to preserving wildlife and natural beauty. However, hosting hunting competitions targeting cats runs counter to these values, posing serious ethical and ecological questions. Cats, whether feral or domestic, play complicated roles in ecological systems. Simply endorsing their hunting without consideration is an irresponsible approach that can disrupt the ecosystem and lacks compassion for life.
In 2021 alone, it was estimated that feral cats contributed to the extinction of 63 species globally, according to an article in Biological Conservation. Yet, indiscriminate culling through recreational competitions is not the appropriate solution. Instead, there should be investment in humane and ecologically friendly methods of controlling feral cat populations, such as trap-neuter-return programs and community education on responsible pet ownership.
Punitive measures must be enforced to ensure that those who participate and organize these inhumane competitions face consequences. New Zealand should set a precedent in the ethical treatment of animals by banning these cruel events immediately and introducing comprehensive policies that promote wildlife protection.
Please join me in calling on the New Zealand government to end the hunting of cats for sport and punish anyone participating in such activities, so we can protect our animals and promote a humane society. Sign the petition to make a difference for the voiceless.
