The Issue

Growing up in Colorado, I've witnessed the unparalleled beauty of our majestic state firsthand. From the Rocky Mountains to our sprawling forests and diverse wildlife, Colorado offers natural wonders that are simply irreplaceable. But there's an alarming threat looming over our cherished landscapes: the proliferation of data centers.

Every year, the demand for data storage grows exponentially. While digital growth is essential, it shouldn’t come at the cost of our environment. Data centers, particularly large ones, are notorious for using vast amounts of electricity and water resources, contributing significantly to environmental degradation. In Colorado, where water is already a precious commodity, this issue becomes even more critical.

In the western United States, Colorado plays a crucial role in water distribution, with its rivers and lakes supplying millions with fresh water. Data centers not only consume vast amounts of this precious resource but can also harm ecosystems by raising water temperatures and releasing pollutants.

Furthermore, the infrastructure needed for such facilities often requires significant land development, which negatively impacts local wildlife habitats. Species native to Colorado, such as the majestic bald eagle or the elusive mountain lion, face the threat of losing their homes.

We cannot allow this development to go unchecked. Our state’s economy, presently buoyed by eco-tourism and outdoor recreation, could suffer as these natural attractions are compromised.

I ask you to join me in urging Colorado's local and state governments to impose a strict ban on the construction of new data centers. Instead, let’s prioritize the implementation of sustainable, renewable energy solutions and more efficient data management technologies.

Sign this petition to protect Colorado’s environment for future generations. Together, we can ensure that our children and grandchildren inherit a Colorado as breathtaking as the one we know today. Let’s fight to maintain the balance between technological progress and environmental stewardship. Please add your voice to this crucial cause by signing the petition.
