Ban Membean from schools to protect students' mental health
The Issue
Throughout my school, I've witnessed countless students struggling with the pressure imposed by Membean, a vocabulary learning tool. Rather than fostering a healthy learning environment, Membean has become a source of stress and anxiety for many of my peers. These observations have pushed me to advocate for a change that will benefit students’ mental health and overall well-being.
Studies suggest that unnecessary academic stress can lead to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. Membean, in particular, has been identified by students as contributing to this issue without providing substantial improvement in learning outcomes. Its repetitive exercises, compounded with the pressure of upholding a perfect score, make students more worried about memorization than genuine learning.
Furthermore, reports indicate that the expected benefits of Membean are not universally felt among students. Despite the program’s intention to improve vocabulary, the stress it generates can overshadow its educational benefits. This is not just an isolated issue; many students feel overwhelmed, and their mental health is suffering as a consequence.
There are alternative educational tools and methodologies that do not strain students' mental health to the same extent. Schools should focus on providing homework that encourages a positive and stress-free learning experience. Promoting mental well-being is crucial, and as educational institutions, schools have a responsibility to prioritize it.
I urge decision-makers in the education sector to reconsider the use of Membean in schools. We must seek homework solutions that support students’ mental health, enhancing the learning experience rather than detracting from it. Please lend your support by signing this petition to remove Membean from our educational tools and prioritize the mental health of students in our community.
