The Issue

My 19-month-old son recently got a hold of a few magnet beads that my older daughter brought into our home, gifted by a friend. These beads are small yet incredibly powerful, and their magnetic pull is dangerously potent. Tragically, my son ended up ingesting some of these beads. We had to rush him to the emergency room, where surgeons worked to repair the severe internal damage—holes in both his colon and stomach—from these hazardous magnets. He has made a full recovery.

Magnet beads, often sold as toys, are marketed as harmless playthings, yet they pose a grave threat to children. These tiny magnets can easily be swallowed or inhaled, and when more than one is ingested, they can attract each other through the walls of the intestines, leading to blockages, perforations, and infections. In severe cases, like my son's, this can be life-threatening. According to a report from the National Poison Data System, there have been over 1,500 cases of children ingesting high-powered magnets between 2009 and 2019, resulting in severe injuries and even fatalities.

Such incidents are not isolated. Parents around the world have shared similar heartbreaking stories of children undergoing multiple surgeries, enduring pain, and suffering due to these so-called toys. Despite these stories, magnet beads continue to be available on toy shelves, marketed without adequate warnings or safeguards. This negligence puts countless children at risk every day.

Support a ban on magnet beads being advertised and sold as toys. These powerful magnets have no place in children's playrooms. By removing these dangerous products from the market, we can protect our children from avoidable harm and prevent other families from experiencing the same trauma.

Please sign this petition to urge regulators and toy manufacturers to take immediate action and prevent any more tragedies. Let's work together to keep our children safe.
