The Issue

As someone who works in Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment, I have witnessed firsthand the immense damage that substances like Kratom and 7-Hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) can inflict on individuals and families. Every day, I see people whose lives have been devastated, not unlike the effects of other opiates. This firsthand observation is what fuels my determination to advocate for the ban of these substances in Tennessee.

Kratom and its derivative 7-OH are often marketed as harmless, natural alternatives for pain relief or mood enhancement. However, these claims hide a much darker reality. According to the FDA, there is substantial evidence suggesting potential safety issues related to the consumption of kratom, including its potential risks of abuse, addiction, and withdrawal symptoms. The CDC reported that between 2016 and 2017, there were over 90 deaths related to kratom use.

Despite not being currently scheduled as an illegal substance at the federal level, the DEA has recognized kratom’s potential for abuse. States and municipalities across the United States, including Alabama, Arkansas, and several cities within Florida, have already banned its use and sale.

In Tennessee, kratom's accessibility makes it particularly alarming. It is readily available in convenience stores and online, often sold under the guise of being a safe alternative to opiates. This misconception leads individuals, particularly vulnerable populations, to unknowingly expose themselves to the risks of dependency and abuse.

Given the substantial evidence and my personal experiences with affected individuals, it is clear that measures need to be put in place for banning kratom and 7-OH in Tennessee. We must act now to protect our communities from the devastating impact these substances can have. Implementing a statewide ban will not only send a strong message about the dangers of these products but will also align Tennessee with other states prioritizing public health and safety.

I urge the Tennessee lawmakers to scrutinize the existing data and consider the experiences from professionals in the SUD field. Our state must take a proactive stand to prevent further harm and safeguard its citizens. Please join me in this vital fight to protect our loved ones by signing this petition. Let us come together and demand action for a healthier, safer Tennessee.
