The Issue

Every time I sit down to complete my homework, I feel an overwhelming sense of dread wash over me. Why? Because I know that I will have to use IXL, an online learning platform that constantly leaves me exhausted and frustrated. Learning should be an exciting and inspiring process, but IXL transforms it into a monotonous chore, draining my energy and my love for learning. This is not just my story. Countless other students across Tennessee experience this same level of exhaustion and disillusionment daily.

IXL is often touted as a personalized learning tool, yet for many students, it provides an impersonal and unfriendly experience. The platform's focus on repeated drilling can cause burnout, rather than fostering a genuine understanding of the material. Studies have shown that excessive screen time and rote memorization tasks can contribute to stress and decreased cognitive function among young people (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2016).

Furthermore, the scoring system on IXL can be particularly demoralizing. The platform penalizes students heavily for incorrect answers, diminishing their confidence and willingness to engage further. It's no wonder many students feel that this methodology is more punitive than supportive.

Children's education affects the entire community. We urge the Tennessee Department of Education to reconsider the use of IXL in our schools. By embracing alternative teaching methods that value creativity and critical thinking, we can ensure a more engaging and less stressful learning environment. Learning is best achieved in a nurturing environment that promotes exploring concepts deeply, not one that punishes mistakes harshly.

Please help us in advocating for a change in our educational resources by signing this petition. Let's work together to create a system that inspires our students rather than exhausting them.
