The Issue

Intentional balloon releases may look harmless, but they have serious and lasting consequences for our environment, wildlife, and communities.

When balloons are released into the air, they do not disappear. They eventually fall back to the ground as litter, often landing in fields, neighborhoods, waterways, and natural habitats across Oklahoma. Once there, they can take years to break down and pose a significant threat to animals.

Wildlife, including birds, fish, and pets, can mistake balloon fragments for food, leading to choking, internal blockages, and death. Balloon strings and ribbons can also entangle animals, causing injury or preventing them from moving or eating.

In addition to harming wildlife, balloon releases contribute to unnecessary litter and cleanup costs for our communities. What begins as a meaningful gesture often results in environmental damage that lasts far longer than the moment itself.

There are many safe and meaningful alternatives available, such as planting trees, lighting candles, blowing bubbles, or holding memorial events that do not harm the environment.

We, the undersigned, urge Oklahoma lawmakers and local city councils to take action by making intentional balloon releases illegal and classifying them as littering.

Protecting our environment and wildlife starts with simple, common-sense changes. It’s time to end intentional balloon releases in Oklahoma.
