Ban horse tethering

The Issue

In the UK, horse tethering is currently legal even though it deprives them from their natural way of living. Whilst the RSPCA acknowledge that these conditions cannot provide a horse with the ideal living environment, the fact no laws are in place to prevent this is deeply concerning. I recently witnessed a horse tethered at the side of a busy road, without shelter from the heat and with no sign of water. The horse only had minimal amounts of grazing, which is extremely different from how a horse would live in the wild or in a large field. Tethering also means there is a higher chance of the horse getting worms than if they were living in a field; this is due to the fact the horse is eating grass from a small area repeatedly. Another problem with using this method is that the horse can't act instinctively, for example they can't roll safely in a chosen spot or run if something spooks them. Tethering prevents horses from behaving naturally which isn't fair, we shouldn't be stopping horses from thriving in their natural environment because it isn't convenient for us. Just because it's legal doesn't mean it's right. To thrive rather than just survive, horses need company, lots of space and a constant supply of clean water. The estimated amount of tethered horses in the UK is currently believed to be as many as 3500. I want to change this and make it illegal to keep a horse in these conditions across the UK. Please support my campaign to help the welfare of thousands of horses across the UK.
