Ban Homework in Peninsula School District

Ban Homework in Peninsula School District
The Issue
My daughter recently started middle school and she's overwhelmed with stress, sometimes to the point of tears, due to the excessive amounts of homework assigned daily. Like many children, she struggles with anxiety and ADHD, and the pressure of completing homework is exacerbating these challenges. It's heartbreaking as a parent to see her without time for anything other than schoolwork. The current system leaves her little room to play, relax, or spend quality time with family.
Teachers in our district have approximately 6.5 hours every day to educate our children. If these hours aren't sufficient for imparting necessary knowledge, perhaps we need to reassess the teaching methodologies rather than overburden our children with evening assignments. As adults, we have the privilege of leaving work behind when we clock out. Why shouldn't our children enjoy the same work-life balance? Mental health issues among children are rising sharply, and unnecessary homework only worsens the situation.
The Peninsula School District isn't alone in this struggle. Nationwide, parents, educators, and students alike question the effectiveness of homework. Studies indicate that excessive homework can lead to high stress levels without significantly improving academic performance. In Finland, for example, children have minimal homework and yet achieve high academic success.
Eliminating or reducing homework can foster a healthier learning environment. With more time for extracurricular activities, students could develop skills beyond academics, such as creativity, sports, and social interactions, leading to well-rounded individuals. Addressing this issue now could lead to positive long-term reform in our educational system.
We urge parents, educators, and policy makers within the Peninsula School District and beyond, to reevaluate the role and necessity of homework. Let's strive for a system that prioritizes our children's mental health and personal growth.
Please join me in advocating for a balanced approach to education that respects our children's time, health, and well-being. Sign this petition to enact change in the Peninsula School District today.
