The Issue

I am a dedicated bird lover and witnessing the heartbreaking distress of a pigeon entangled in netting at my workplace moved me profoundly. Unable to free itself in the oppressive heat of a recent heatwave, the poor creature suffered greatly. This scenario isn't an isolated incident but rather a grim reality for countless pigeons who navigate our urban landscapes each day.

Bird netting, intended to protect properties, paradoxically becomes a lethal trap for these innocent creatures. Designed to keep pigeons and other birds away, these nets frequently malfunction, entangling birds and leading to severe injuries or even death. The distress calls from suffering birds interrupt the natural balance within urban environments, disrupting not only the wildlife but also the human experience with nature.

According to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), improperly installed or maintained bird netting is one of the leading causes of harm to urban birds. In many UK cities, reports of birds trapped in netting have risen sharply, coinciding with increased urban development and the resultant growth of netting installations. The safety measures meant to deter birds from nesting become unintended death traps when neglected or poorly managed.

We propose a critical re-examination of bird netting policies and practices within our cities. Alternatives such as bird-friendly architectural designs, spikes, or electronic bird control devices can offer more humane and effective solutions without compromising the aesthetics or maintenance of urban properties. It is essential to install these preventive measures responsibly and with respect for wildlife.

Raising awareness about the ethical and ecological implications of current bird netting practices is a crucial step. Regulations and guidelines must be put in place to ensure the responsible and ethical management of bird control measures, including regular maintenance checks and proper installation processes for netting to prevent accidental entrapments.

We urge city planners, property owners, and local governments to join in taking action against hazardous bird netting before more lives are lost. By adopting comprehensive and conscientious strategies, we can create urban spaces that safeguard the welfare of all creatures.

Please sign this petition to demand a review of current bird netting policies and encourage the adoption of safer, bird-friendly measures in our urban areas.
