Ban GoGuardian spyware from Cambridge Public School computers
The Issue
I have personally witnessed the invasive nature of GoGuardian, a software program installed on Cambridge Public School computers that conducts surveillance on students during and after school hours. This software claims to ensure student safety; however, it is fundamentally a breach of privacy, tracking students' online activities without their explicit consent.
There have been countless instances where students have reported being monitored beyond school sessions. As young individuals, students deserve the right to surf the internet without the fear of being watched constantly. This pervasive presence of GoGuardian not only invades personal space but also creates an environment of mistrust between students and educators.
Privacy experts and civil rights advocates have repeatedly pointed out the dangers of such surveillance tools. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has reported that surveillance technologies in schools can foster an oppressive environment that stifles creativity and independence, which are critical to a healthy learning process.
Moreover, a study by the Brennan Center for Justice indicates that excessive surveillance may disproportionately impact minority students, contributing to a biased and inequitable educational atmosphere. By allowing GoGuardian to operate unchecked, we risk perpetuating these negative outcomes.
It’s imperative that Cambridge Public Schools uphold the students’ right to privacy by seeking alternative, less invasive tools to ensure safety and productive learning. Solutions such as educating students about digital citizenship and offering mental health support can significantly mitigate the perceived need for constant surveillance.
We must take action now to protect the liberties and personal growth of our students. By signing this petition, you will join us in urging Cambridge Public Schools to ban GoGuardian once and for all, creating a safer, more privacy-conscious environment for our future leaders. Please sign this petition to demand change.
